Subject: Snowflake Semantic View Materializations: Faster Metrics with Automatic Query RewritesTitle: Faster Semantic Queries with Snowflake Materializations Snowflake's Semantic View materializations improve query performance by precomputing aggregations from existing semantic view metrics and dimensions. You define a freshness window with MAX_STALENESS and create a materialization at the grain that best fits your workload, while Snowflake handles background refreshes automatically. Eligible Semantic SQL queries are then automatically rewritten to use the materialization, so one fine-grained rollup can often support multiple broader queries through re-aggregation. This works especially well for additive metrics like SUM, COUNT, MIN, and MAX. In TPC-DS benchmarks, a single materialization sped up four queries by 59x to 91x and reduced scanned data from 359 GB to 120 MB. The main limitations are non-additive metrics like AVG, MEDIAN, PERCENTILE, and COUNT(DISTINCT), as well as queries that fall outside the materialization's freshness, filter, policy, or coverage rules.
