ASOF JOIN
- Have you ever tried to match two tables using timestamps? Regular JOINs only match exact timestamp values. In practice, real-world data rarely aligns perfectly. Whether you are working with stock prices, event logs, or sensor readings, timestamps often contain gaps or delays. As a result, regular JOINs can fail to capture important records, leading to data loss and extra cleanup work. That is where an ASOF JOIN becomes useful. It allows SQL to match each row with the most recent preceding row based on time, even when the timestamps do not align exactly. With this approach, you can answer questions such as:
- What was the stock price immediately before each trade?
- What was the sensor reading just before the alarm was triggered?
- Failing to properly index the timestamp column, which can significantly slow down performance.
- Using incorrect JOIN conditions. Always verify the logic carefully.
- Assuming a regular JOIN can replace an ASOF JOIN. This can result in lost data.
